Marks and Spencer’s large retail store at Brixton was due for refurbishment, and part of the store at ground floor level was located very close to the major railway line into London Bridge station, with many loud trains passing overhead.

 

There was concern from head office about railway noise and vibration being heard in the store and a possible reduction in sales figures. Based on our extensive experience of successfully resolving complex noise issues previously for Marks and Spencer at other stores, Shaun Murkett Acoustic Consultants Ltd were called in and commissioned to investigate and undertake noise and vibration surveys, and to make recommendations in a comprehensive noise report for the design and management team.

 

This noise report was quickly compiled and issued, with technical advice on the various materials and installation technique, and the recommendations were integrated into the architects’ design, and the refurbishment was completed. Follow up completion noise and vibration tests successfully confirmed a substantial reduction in the noise from the railway line heard inside the building. The Marks and Spencer management team were happy, and the Brixton store opened on time and successfully started trading again.
