Building and Architectural Design

Masjid Islamic Cultural Centre, London.

1674

The new owners of this large old manor house in East London wanted to create a new a Islamic Cultural centre, and had to apply to the local Authority for change of use planning permission. As the manor house is close to residents there were concerns about possible noise and disturbance from the new use. It was also a Grade 2 Listed historic building, known to date back to at least 1400. This had to be considered very carefully, as being Grade 2 listed any proposal had to conform to the strict regulations of the Local Authority Planning departments and also the English Heritage organisation.

Shaun Murkett Acoustic Consultants Ltd, were called in and commissioned by the owners to investigate and undertake sound tests, liaise with the design team and planners, and to give specialist technical advice in a comprehensive acoustic report with detailed design recommendations to meet all the requirements.

The improvements and recommendations were soon approved and carefully completed during the refurbishment, and follow up sound tests confirmed the success of the works. A sound limiter was also installed and after a visit by the local authority noise team, our reports and our certificates were all accepted, and the Islamic Cultural Centre is now successfully open.

I would like to offer my thanks for the work you carried out to deal

with the noise testing issues and to the extent that a successful result was achieved with the discharge of the relevant outstanding planning conditions in relation to the Islamic Cultural Centre. I look forward to working with you on other projects in the future.
