This survey and report followed on from a previous report where we recommended pre-purchase noise tests for any new equipment on trial, particularly when in use in noise sensitive areas. Manufacturers were invited to submit their quietest castors for the assessment noise tests, which were for use on shopping trolleys.

The castors were due to be replaced on a large number of trolleys and a large contract was about to be placed. As part of the tendering and decision process an assessment of the relative merits of each castor in terms of noise level and cost was commissioned. Noise tests were conducted on a typical concrete surface with professional sound level meters to measure the noise levels. The tests took place with representatives from each manufacturer present, and the noise results analysed and a report issued to the logistics and purchasing departments. The large contract was placed with the successful manufacturer, following the conclusions and the recommendations in the noise report.
