This large successful restaurant had applied for a late Public Entertainment Licence until 4.00 am on Fridays only, for functions and record company promotions. These events became successful and the changing nature of the previous commercial-only area, with more residents moving in around Old Street, attracted some objections to the renewal from local residents. The licence was about to be withdrawn, in the face of articulate, concerted opposition from residents, with petitions etc.,and we were called in to help resolve the situation. A noise survey was undertaken and a report issued, the recommendations put in place, a new sound system installed, the sound limiter calibrated, and a workingdialogue established with the residents. We represented the client at the licence hearing, and the licence was successfully renewed. We have continued to regularly advise the client, issue calibration certificates, and appear at the hearings to maintain the Public Entertainment Licence. This was subsequently extended to include additional nights, and the business has successfully grown with the licence regularly renewed without problems. We have also advised the client on other feasibility noise surveys for potential venues to expand the business.
